3112: REMBRANDT VAN RIJN

Hollstein XVIII, 149, B 365. Seidlitz 365, II. Nowell-Usticke B 365, II. – Abzug auf leicht gelblichem, dünnen Japanpapier mit büttenähnlicher Struktur. – Ab 1647 verwendete Rembrandt für seine Arbeiten neben europäischen auch fernöstliche Papiere, darunter solche aus China, Indien und Japan. – Laut Einlieferer wurde die Echtheit in der Graphischen Sammlung in München im Jahre 1965 bestätigt (hs. Annotation); da uns die Expertise zu fernöstlichen Papieren fehlt, können wir nicht ausschließen, dass es sich nicht um einen alten Abdruck handelt. – Verso nach vorne durchschlagende Montage – und Klebstoffspuren in den oberen Ecken und seitlich rechts, oben und seitlich bis innerhalb der Plattenkante beschnitten, Fehlstelle rechts unprofessionell ergänzt, oben etw. knittrig, minimal fleckig.

Signed and dated 1636. – Mounted on paper, under passe-partout. – Print on yellowish, thin washi paper with a texture reminiscent of laid paper. – From 1647 on, Rembrandt used not only European but also Far Eastern papers for his works, including those from China, India and Japan. – According to the consignor, the authenticity of this print has been confirmed in 1965 by the State Graphic Collection in Munich (annotation on passe-partout); however as we are lacking the expertise in Far Eastern papers, we can’t completely rule out a later print. – Verso with traces of mounting which are shining through on the front in the upper corners and on the right side, trimmed up to the plate line on the upper part and the sides, unprofessionally remargined damage on the right, some creasing on the top, minimally soiled.
